Scouting for Food
Teams Up With
Stamp Out Hunger
May 9, 2026
Scouting for Food is the largest community service food drive in our area, involving Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturers, and Explorers. For 2026, the Mid-Iowa Council is partnering with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to assist them with their “Stamp Out Hunger” drive.
The pilot drive for Stamp Out Hunger was held in 10 cities in October 1991, and it proved so successful that work began immediately to make it a nationwide effort. The movement has grown over the last 30 years. Each spring, from Alaska to Florida and Maine to Hawaii, letter carriers do double duty—delivering mail and picking up donations. Over 30 years, NALCA has collected more than 1.94 billion pounds of food for those in need.
How do your units get involved?
- Before the event – Hang door hangers in your neighborhood. Post fliers at local businesses, the library, community centers, and other public spaces to help spread the word.
- Day of the event – Help your neighborhood letter carrier collect food on Saturday, May 9th. The food will be taken to the postal office and delivered to your local food pantry or help at a storefront collection location.
- After the event – Help sort food following the drive! After the drive, your local pantry will need help checking and sorting all the donations. Sign up for a day to help.
